A little bit about us...
Genevieve’s Crutches was formed for the charitable purpose of providing the therapeutic value of color and pattern on crutches and canes for handicapped people who rely on them. We have been giving our customized crutches to military amputees injured in the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and to others who are recovering on crutches. All of our crutches and canes are given as gifts.
Genevieve was on crutches for many months due to hip problems, which required two separate surgeries when she was just 15 years old. Early on she decided to decorate her crutches — it somehow made her feel better about being on them. She hobbled about on her Mets-themed crutches from one NYC hospital to another. People would stop her to comment on them everywhere we went, and the focus quickly changed from the injury to something positive and fun. It became clear that this should be shared with others going through the rehab process.
We have enjoyed providing friends, teachers, athletes and acquaintances with colorful crutches to help them through a difficult time, but we are especially proud of our experience with our injured military. Most people are on crutches for just a week or two, but these men and women are amputees that will rely on crutches or canes for the rest of their lives. A little color and pattern truly alters how they feel about this new and permanent apparatus in their lives.
We travel to the Walter Reed Military Hospital in Bethesda MD every 4 months with a batch of stylized crutches and spend the day giving them away to patients in the amputee rehab center, hearing their stories in return. It is a privilege to be among these men and women and their care-givers. It is our goal to be able to help children in similar circumstances, where a condition has left them reliant on crutches from a very young age.
